13. CHECK MATE

You show two brass discs, one with a white coloured centre, the other with a black centre. The white one is held in the right palm, the black one in the left. You close both hands into fists, make a passing movement with the two hands, and on opening both hands it is seen that the brass discs have transposed: white is now in the left hand, while black is in the right hand. The hands are again closed and the discs transpose again, returning to their starting positions.

The onlookers by this time have surmised that both brass discs are white on one side and black on the other: but when you place one brass disc on the other all the sides of the two chips are now black and white checks!
